SAO PAULO, Dec 19 (Reuters) - Brazil has increased chicken production despite the emergence of the highly contagious bird flu virus, first detected in the country in May. However, commercial poultry farms remain unaffected.

As per the latest projections from the pork and poultry lobby ABPA, Brazil is set to produce up to 14.9 million tons of chicken meat by the end of this year and up to 15.35 million tons in 2024.

This indicates an annual output growth of up to 2.6% for 2023 and up to 3.7% for 2024, solidifying Brazil's position as the world's leading chicken supplier.

With the production boost this year and increased demand from importers, Brazil is expected to claim nearly a 38% market share in the global chicken trade, up from approximately 36% in 2022, according to ABPA.

ABPA President Ricardo Santin commended Brazil's ability to safeguard its commercial poultry farms, despite the avian influenza virus affecting wild birds, sea mammals, and backyard animals. He cautioned that dealing with the disease would become a constant challenge, stating that "the virus will be around all the time."

Representing companies such as BRF SA (BRFS3.SA) and JBS SA (JBSS3.SA), ABPA also reported a steady increase in pork production by local firms.

Pork output in the world's fourth-largest exporter is projected to grow to up to 5.1 million tons in 2023 and up to 5.15 million tons in 2024, according to ABPA.

In 2023, Brazilian chicken exports are expected to reach a record of up to 5.15 million tons, with export values estimated between $9.5 billion and $10 billion. For 2024, Brazilian chicken exports are anticipated to reach up to 5.3 million tons as global demand for Brazilian products continues.

Positive prospects are also outlined for Brazilian pork exports, estimated at up to 1.22 million tons in 2023 and up to 1.3 million tons in 2024. The value of pork exports is predicted to be around $2.8 billion in 2023, as per ABPA.

ABPA suggests that Brazil might surpass Canada to become the world's third-largest pork exporter, particularly as sales from the North American nation decline.

Additionally, Brazilian companies are actively exploring new markets for pork, targeting the United Kingdom and Malaysia, among others.
